Tabaka Tawerna, April 2008

Tabaka Tawerna, April 2008

Tabaka Tawerna is located in the very centre of Warsaw, a short distance to major hotels and all the Capital City has to offer, but visiting it is  like going for holidays. Summer look of the restaurant greets you at the very  entrance  and the interior leaves no doubts that  this place will provide you with experience similar to  some of the seaside Taverns.

Both mediterranean and Balkan elements underlined by Ottoman empire style create a unique interior .

Upon entering the restaurant you will be  welcomed by the noise of live Balkan music and vivid atmosphere inside. This was quite a surprise as such a relaxing, Mediterranean  atmosphere is rare to find  at Warsaw restaurants.

Serving typical  Balkan cuisine, Tabaka Tawerna’s menu , includes lamb, mutton meat and  special Mediterranean section. Advised by waiter, me and my partner  started with Meze (PLN 29) – selection of Balkan pastes for two – served in a funny way with nice regional bread and by waiter wearing jingeling belly dance belt (you always hear when your meal is coming). I liked especially the paste made of humus or egg plant, but the other ones - surnebes, ajwar, tzatzik or taramas were also tasty.

Inspired by starter for two, we took main course for two as well – Mix Fish (PLN 99) – a plate of two kinds of fish, mussels coated in thin batter, shrimps shashlik, coated calamari rings and 3 kinds of pastes – krompiri, gruvec ljutenica and tzatzik, served with gjuvec (boiled rice with herbs) and baked potatoes with spinach, garlic, onion and white cheese. The “Mix Fish” is served on a hot pan – smelling really great and looking even better. Good choice indeed. Both fish were very fresh and tasty. The stick with crispy and juicy shrimps and cheese was delicious and it was pity that there was only one.  Mussels or calamari rings served in small bowls completed the variety of seafood.

As for the choice of wine, the card is not that wide, but the regional Moldavian wine, are pretty decent and for good price.

If you come by on Saturday evening you are likely to enjoy  charming and light-dressed girls walking between the tables, performing a belly-dance show and making the atmosphere even more relaxing.  -.   The Tawern also offers tobacco and water pipes of various tastes.

Tabaka Tawern is a great place for a group or private dinner with a beloved one to enjoy both tasty meals and relaxing atmosphere and also to get to know a bit more about Balkan culture.
