By train

warsaw train stationPoland has a well developed rail network. Major Polish cities are interconnected by Intercity express trains running between European cities. The national railway network is administered and serviced by the Polish State Railways (PKP; www.pkp.pl). PKP runs three main types of trains:

  • Express Services (ekspresowy), particularly IC (intercity) or EC (Eurocity), stop at main cities only, and paid seat reservations (miejscowka) are compulsory
  • Fast Trains (pospieszny) are cheaper, but not necessarily slower
  • Standart Services (osobowy). These are less predictable and sometimes really overcrowded so you could consider paying fifty percent extra to travel first class.

For journeys over 100km and for international trips you can also buy tickets in advance at Orbis travel agencies (branches in all towns and cities). Departures (odjazdy) are printed on yellow posters, arrivals (przyjazdy) on white posters on visible places around the station halls. Polish word “Peron” means platform in English.
